Chicken tonight - and every night

Ladywell residents will soon be able to eat fried chicken to their heart’s content – and order it from a different takeaway each night. Yes, the country’s favourite food will soon be available from two new outlets on our high street.  Coming soon – The Village Chicken Hut at the old off licence at 222 Algernon Road, expected to open in about two weeks time. Soon after – or even at the same time  – a finger lickin’ fried chicken outlet is expected to open in the Chinese takeway which is currently being refurbished.  LVIG wishes the owners well but remains concerned about the proliferation of takeaway outlets on our high streets. Good, honest fare.

Please no. Not more fried chicken shops. Shame on Lewisham for letting so many places become the same cheap, unhealthy food outlets. As if there aren't already enough of them.

Not sure you normally get healthy salad as your photo suggests - and even if you did it would probably end up strewn on our pavements as most of the packaging often is - sigh!

Could surely only be "good honest fare" (Anonymous above) if a big notice were displayed telling punters of the health implications of eating a fried chicken diet and the battery farm origin of the cheap chicken. That's honesty!

.....at least the Foxes will be happy. Just thinking of all those discarded bones and boxes....

I walked past two empty chicken boxes thrown on the floor and my heart sank. It's obviously going to be popular, judging by the line of customers waiting outside. I'll be making a point of politely returning empty boxes I find to the owners. They'll need to take responsibility for the inevitable litter some of their customers create, and should know that people living here don't want to see chicken bones, boxes and sauce sachets all over the place.

The Chinese takeaway has moved up to 105 Ladywell Road (the long-closed Galad internet cafe)and has opened. So its former premises are going to be another chicken takeaway? Expect chicken "wars" then. And yes, the orange and red chicken boxes have started to appear on the pavements up Ladywell Road.
One nearby trader expressed concern as to what will happen when local school children return after the holiday and find their "favourite" food is now available. Will the outlet be able to cope with the concentrated demand, or will fights break out?

Unfortunately, the Council cannot control what is sold in shops etc (providing it's legal), even if it wanted to.

yes, chicken boxes - I live on Vicars Hill and it's not unusual to see two, three, four boxes up the hill, and with their assorted plastic cutlery and napkins . . .

I thought the council could have a say in what is sold when it comes to food outlets? Mind you I could have dreamt that.

On one hand people are told the importance of a good diet and the financial implications on the NHS to deal with bad diet related ilnesses. On the other hand irresponsible councils continue to grant permits for fast food outlets.
What a shameful contradiction.

Interesting the Chinese takeaway people objected to Oscars licence on the grounds that there were already too many food outlets on Ladywell Road.
These people.....

No....not happy about this at all. what is it Ladywell is trying to achieve here? Having lived in Lewisham all my life, I can see the changes that have happened in Ladywell....this sort of rubbish needs to be stopped if Ladywell is to continue it descent to a better place.

It is a pity that the Off License closed, supermarkets can be blamed and the occasional scary holdup and owner's health, very sad. Evening Standard once described Ladywell as 'Shabby but Chic'. I am afraid the empty discarded fast food (to buy and discard) means more Shabby now. Health implications of deep fried whatever is scary too. Shop should have a message to discard properly. It seems to be popular though, including with the foxes as someone said, we have six energetic and inquisitive cubs in our back garden den!

As a new Ladywell resident this disappoints me, I love Oscars, Slater and Kings and Els deli. I say bring more shops like this- it brings the village feel to the neighbourhood and a nice restaurant or two would be a real improvement (love the tandoori and the tavern but could do with more variety). I'm not a snob, I have nothing against people's choice in fast food (I indulge too!) but would really enjoy a bit more variety...
