Ladywell Tavern closes for refurb

It seems the Ladywell Tavern is taking the disruption caused by the current streetscape improvement works as a convenient opportunity to close, from today, for a welcome refurbishment.  The pub expects to reopen sometime in September.  If we can find out more on the refurb and the re-opening date we'll post it here.

Sounds good. In need of a face lift. Still a great pub though. Looks like I'll be down the ravensbourne a bit more.

I really hope it's not "refurbishment" meaning "out of business." Please let it be a proper refurbishment. Great pub. Great staff. Please re-open soon!

Great beer; great staff; landlord who can be a bit moody and bad-tempered. Pity.

2 months seems a long time for a refurb. Did anyone speak to the landlord

It seems that Monty, the Landlord, has 'confided' to fellow traders that the pub is closing, which seems likely, on the balance of probabilities, given a refurb that will make any difference is likely to cost a few £k at the very least.

My neighbour sent this round: "The bar staff at the Ladywell Tavern has been saying that the place is closing on Saturday for good, and that Tesco is interested in buying the building. The place is currently leased from a brewery (which is why Monty can't make enough money from the place or get more guest beers in)."
If true, what happens to all the small businesses in Ladywell???

This is such sad news. How can it be that such a popular and successful pub can shut down. Seems that landlords have way too much power in Ladywell as regards local businesses. I hope the Tesco thing is nothing other than a nasty rumour.

Unbelievable - that a popular pub such as this must close down. We were hoping that the streetscape works were to improve Ladywell for the residents, to attract new, independent retailers to the area and to ensure that existing businesses had a better chance of survival not to encourage the likes of Tesco to move in. If these rumours are true there must be a massive uprising against such a beautiful historic building being used in such a way. Ladywell has so much going for it in terms of location and desperately needs places to go out in the evening.

We can't let Tesco come in. Ladywell needs a pub. With the news of the Catford Bridge Tavern's closure too, this is a disaster.

I can't tell you how sad this makes me. Its horrible to see businesses fail. The Ladywell Tavern was not everyone's cup of tea but it was run with all the right inentions and it was nice to see it attracting solid custom. Clearly not solid enough - or as someone else suggested perhaps the landlords had something to do with it?

Oh, please, no Tesco. I'm so glad the one opposite the Brockley Jack seems to have stalled, protecting Jay's, but there are already so many Tesco Expresses in the area. Every small general business in Ladywell will be shut in no time if this happens.

Anyone have an update on this? Really hope it stays as a pub.

Looks like the pub has now been "occupied".

It's been squatted now, such a shame that a pub which was an important part of the community is no more. There are notices by the squatter on the windows saying it is their home etc
