Local residents have urged the council to extend the Ladywell controlled parking zone to cover Embleton Road which they say is now suffering increased congestion. A petition calling on the council to reconsider the road’s exclusion from the local CPZ implemented last year was presented to this week’s full council meeting. Residents who helped organise the petition said the road had been left “to bear the brunt of commuter parking” and was now heavily congested during weekdays. When the consultation on the CPZ was first undertaken residents voted not to be included. But some now say they did not realise the implications of being excluded from the parking zone and want the council to look at it again.

And just when the Council has voted to double residents' parking charges to £120 pa. Perhaps consideration could be given to making the part of Chudleigh Road already in the CPZ into a Pay & Display section - the road is pretty well devoid of parked cars in the morning, and the Council is looking for more money!!
CPZ's are very selfish and it brings out the selfish side of residents in a very unpleasant way, Embleton Road gets included then the parking is just pushed up the hill, then the next road wants a CPZ and parking is pushed up again - the problem is that there's a fundamental flaw in the concept of a CPZ in the way that it's presently operated - and it's no answer to say 'well, it's how the Council has to operate it'.
The simple answer is just to have the CPZ enforced for a few hours in the middle of the day - this will deter the long term parkers but not people who just wish to park for an hour or two - and to have it free for residents . . .
Dear anonymous - as an Algernon Road resident who latterly (until the CPZ) was often unable to park within 200+ yards of my house (difficult with young kids) I welcomed parking control. But you are right, we do not currently need the 9am-7pm controlled hours: I would be happy with a shorter controlled period around lunchtime (and still pay the same if necessary) - this would deter commuters but still enable tradesmen etc, to park. Embleton's mistake was not to see the areas parking problems holistically: this shifting of the problem was entirely predicted/predicable and the CPZ will need to go all the way to the top of the hill (at least) before commuters are deterred from parking. Importantly, however, the CPZ will be needed all day, I suspect, once the Loampit Vale 'Renaissance' development is complete and occupied as a proportion of the new residents there will have cars and be looking to park them on-street nearby, as will users of the new leisure centre in due course.

CPZ is another example of Council extortion. CPZ in nearby areas caused parking problems where I live, but rather than abolish the cause of the problem, is is seen as a solution and something we need to apply as a solution? Moreover, the council told me that the votes for CPZ are counted in the privacy of the council office. They obviously have a lot to lose from a 'no' vote. Do they think we are all idiots?

I live on Embleton and voted against the extended CPZ this time and the last time it was surveyed by the council.
Being unable to park close to your home is irritating and sometimes disruptive but the CPZ is effectively only a bribe paid by residents to the council in exchange for them pushing the problem onto other streets. By progressively surveying streets and implementing a creeping system of CPZs the council ratchets up the pressure on streets who resist while studiously ignoring the underlying reasons and exploration of alternatives.
I strongly suspect that nearly as many people on Embleton voted against the extended CPZ as voted for it. However, as an Embleton resident I will need to explain to friends and relatives that they will need to pay to visit my in future, and will have to prepare for likely increases in CPZ already raised charges by the council in future.
